University of Maryland horse Millie gets a bath by UMD equestrian club member in April 2023. The UMD Equestrian Club and equine studies students work to care for UMD horses.

Millie spends time in the pasture on Farm Drive in late April. She can be seen eating grass alongside Diva, the smallest UMD horse.

UMD horse Noble and her baby are taken to their stalls by UMD animal science staff and students in early April, 2023. Blue was born in unexpectedly in December.

The young horse stands timidly next to his mother in early April, 2023. Noble is very protective of her baby and neighs at visitors who get too close.

The horse chews on tarp between stalls at the UMD horse barn in April 2023. The young horse is much more curious than the matured horses in the barn and that can lead to some trouble for staff.

The young horse stands by the barn door in its stall. The horse is not yet tall enough to look out on the horses in the pasture.

A members of the UMD equestrian club takes horse, Clifford, out to ride in April 2023. The club regularly rides horses to prepare them for lessons.

Signs around the horse farm warn visitors not to pet or feed the horses. Inside, posters warn that horses may mistake fingers for carrots.

Horses Sonny and Quinn (left to right) spend time in the pasture towards the Xfinity Center in early May 2023.

Equestrian club trainer Julia Grafstein takes Quinn to the barn to prepare for a ride on May 3, 2023. Quinn is used for riding lessons for all levels of experience in the equestrian club.
Grafstein pets Sonny as she leaves with Quinn on May 3, 2023. Sonny is very upset being left along in his pasture.
Sonny watches closely as Julia and Quinn head to the barn. Sonny was an amish trail horse before he came to the UMD horse barn.

Quinn and Julia walk to the horse barn to prepare for a ride. Julia helps the horses learn and practice new tricks as they ride.

Equestrian club member Grace Strosnider rides Quinn in early May. Before a UMD horse is ridden, their rider must make sure they are clean and brushed before putting their riding gear on.

Grafstein rides Sonny alongside Quinn and Strosnider. The pair practice different commands with the horses and train them to jump or trot over certain obstacles.

Strosnider walks Quinn around the enclosure in early May.

Quinn licks his legs while the girls pause their rides. His legs are wrapped to help protect his ankles as he rides.

The pair slow to a walk as they end their training session. The girls chat about the recent events of Maryland day and their showcase the prior weekend.
