Final Project - Jillian Diamond

On Living with a Disabled Relative - by Jillian Diamond

This is my sister, Abby. Abby is 17 and has a neurological condition called Rett Syndrome. Because of this, she has trouble with walking, talking, eating, and other simple things. Abby sometimes uses a stroller to get around because walking is difficult for her. (Photo taken in Washington, D.C. on October 12, 2019)

These are all the medications Abby has to take during the first half of the day. Many of these are to mitigate the symptoms she experiences from her condition, such as seizures. (Photo taken in Washington, D.C. on October 12, 2019)

Abby eating and drinking. She is able to eat by herself, she just has difficulty handling utensils and eats slowly. She also uses special cups that she's able to grip better, and these usually have straws to help her drink. (Photo taken in Washington, D.C. on October 13, 2019)

On the roof of the Newseum. Abby doesn't always look at the camera very well, so we end up having to take a lot of photos of her in order to get actual good shots. (Photo taken in Washington, D.C. on October 13, 2019)

Abby's birthday is on November 27, so we celebrated during a family Thanksgiving gathering. Her younger cousin, Maya, had to blow out the candles for her. The "Happy Birthday" song is Abby's favorite, so we sung it twice. (Photo taken on November 28, 2019)

Abby always sleeps like this, and she sleeps a lot. We don't really know why - when she's not doing anything, she'll just sleep. (Photos taken on November 26 and 30, 2019)
